First edition. The third of Jane Austen's novels to be published was begun about the same time Sense and Sensibility was accepted for publication. The novel was published in May 1814 in an edition of 1,250 copies. John Murray later "expressed astonishment that so small an edition of such a work should have been sent into the world".
3 volumes, octavo (180 × 100 mm). 20th-century blue half calf, spines gilt in compartments, marbled sides, brown endpapers, red speckled edges. Housed in a black cloth slipcase made by The Chelsea Bindery. Occasional light foxing to contents, short closed tears to pages 113 and 114 of volume I. An excellent set.
