First and only edition. Extremely uncommon, no copies recorded on OCLC, not in NMM or on COPAC, a single copy traced in the Library of the Society of the Cincinnati. Extremely interesting account of privateering in the Spanish and Franco-Spanish Wars, the French War, and the Revolution. Well-researched and with some excellent ship-lists. William Payne Sheffield, born Block Island 1820, was a Harvard law graduate, member of the state house of representatives, and briefly a senator, and stalwart of the Historical Society. Inscribed with initials in pencil by Sheffield on the title page to Oliver H. Perry, a descendant of the renowned commander of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Sheffield delivered an address at the dedication of the Perry statue in Newport, RI, in 1885.

Octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to the upper board, yellow surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, and slightly soiled on the lower board, light toning, overall very good.
