First edition thus, this the first combined issue, with first edition, second printing sheets of Tales bound with first printing sheets of The Raven (later copies have third printing sheets of Tales). Poe's Tales is "The first important book of detective fiction, the cornerstone of cornerstones in any readers' or collectors' guide, the highest of all highspots: The 1845 edition includes for the first time in book form all three Dupin stories - 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue', 'The Mystery of Marie Roget', and 'The Purloined Letter'. 'The Gold Bug' is also included" (Queen's Quorum).
2 works issued together in one vol., crown octavo. Original brown cloth, sides blocked in blind, spine lettered gilt "Library of American Books" etc, endpapers printed in brown with an all-over design of stars and dots. Tales with half-title, copyright statement in 4 lines, and publisher's adverts at the end beginning "German Romance". Early pencilled ownership inscription on front free endpaper; bookseller's inkstamp to initial blank. Spine rather worn at ends, corners rubbed, small inkstain to rear cover, small marginal stain towards end of text and occasionally at head, still a good copy.
