First edition of James's enduringly controversial American novel about ideological conflict in 1870s America. Edel & Laurence state that the first printing was of 500 copies, published 16 February 1886, with a second undifferentiated impression of 100 copies the following month.

3 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, boards panelled in black, black coated endpapers. Spines rolled, slight wear to extremities in places, 1½ inch split at head of vol. 3 front joint, short split to cloth at foot of rear board of same vol., minor marks to boards, vol. 2 rear inner hinge cracked, others sound (hairline cracks to vol. 1 rear inner hinge). W. H. Smith's subscription library labels to front pastedowns, overstamped "sold", no other library marks. Ownership inscriptions of W. V. Paley, 1887, at head of titles; ownership inscription of Oliver L. Zangwill (1913-1987), British research psychologist and the founder of neuropsychology, to vol. 1 half-title, dated 1938. One or two minor spots or marks in the text; overall a very good copy in unrestored cloth.
