The Criminal Prosecution and Capital Punishment of Animals.
First edition. Having graduated from the University of Michigan and studied for three years at Göttingen, Berlin and Munich, in 1862 Evans was appointed Professor of Modern Languages at his alma mater. He resigned in 1870 to become a private scholar and freelance journalist ; "and before long his high, broad forehead and flowing beard were a permanent feature of the Royal Library [in Munich.] …An incessant student, he became learned in half a dozen subjects and more than well informed in a score, but his taste ran to the devious and abstruse. Few heads in his generation could have held more, or more diverse, information than his." (DAB) The present is considered to be amongst his "best and most characteristic work," being an "erudite study of medieval law."
Octavo, original dark blue combed cloth, title gilt to the spine. Frontispiece and title-page vignette. Light shelf-wear, endpapers a little browned, some foxing to the fore-edge, otherwise a very good copy.
