First edition. George Virtue issued an updated 2nd edition in 1837 with a 5th volume covering the suburbs. In vol.1 the illustration plate titled ' Map of Roman London' is bound as the frontispiece, not at p.17 as listed. In vol.4 the plate titled 'View of Temple Church' is bound at p.295 instead of p.395, and 'Sepulchral Effigies, Temple Church' is at p.297 instead of p.397.
4 volumes, octavo (210 × 133mm). Contemporary black half calf over marbled boards, red morocco spine label, spine decoratively blocked in blind and gilt-ruled in compartments, red sprinkled edges. 37 engraved copper plates (2 folding) and numerous woodcuts in text, contemporary inscriptions to front free endpapers and half-titles. Some wear to extremities and sides, front hinges of vols. 1 and 3 cracked but holding, text block of vol. 4 slightly shaken with sheet containing list of illustrations loosely inserted, contents and list of illustrations missing from vol.3
