First edition of Herbert's poems, collected by his friend Nicholas Ferrar of Little Gidding and posthumously published the same year as those of John Donne, with whom Herbert is often bracketed. Herbert's English poems are notable for their controlled and inventive use of form, expressed in a wide variety of modes and dramatic voices. Using more homely imagery than Donne's extravagant metaphysical conceits, they often echo the Psalms in simplicity of diction and metaphor. "One of Herbert's most influential admirers of the century was T. S. Eliot Herbert continues to be a major influence on poets writing in English, including among those in the twentieth century the American writer Elizabeth Bishop and the Irish poet and critic Seamus Heaney" (ODNB).
Duodecimo (143 × 77 mm). Skilfully rebound in full tan calf, red morocco label, plain endpapers. Title within typographic border, typographic head- and tailpieces. Title leaf restored in gutter not affecting text or border, some browning and soiling, chiefly marginal, a good copy.
