Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World.

Teerink's "B" edition, with the portrait of Gulliver in second state, as usual. The first three editions of Gulliver's Travels are all octavos published by Benjamin Motte dated 1726 without edition statement, and were long thought of as merely different issues. The edition designated Second on the title-page is dated 1727. It was noted by John Gay that, "The whole impression sold in a week". It was hailed as a classic that "would last as long as the language, because it described the combination of qualities which made it at once a favourite book of children and a summary of bitter scorn for mankind" (DNB). "Gulliver's Travels has given Swift immortality beyond temporary fame" (PMM 185).
2 volumes, octavo (178 × 115 mm). Contemporary calf, red and green morocco labels, red speckled edges. Frontispiece portrait, 5 maps, and 1 diagram. Ownership signature partially erased from verso of each front free endpaper. Repairs to joints and corners, some light marking and spotting to contents, minor crease and tear to frontispiece. Excellent condition.
