First edition. "The official history of the campaign in Mesopotamia is long and costly. Those who are interested in the early and perhaps most dramatic part, that is, up to the siege of Kut, will find here a clear and concise account which may serve their purpose. They will also find comment, from an able soldier, of a sort that does not find its way into official histories" (Falls). Bird served in the Niger Expedition and on the North-West Frontier, 1897-8, receiving the medals for both campaigns, he was also present at the relief of Mafeking, where he was severely wounded. He was again severely wounded during the Great War and had his leg amputated. Between 1903-5 he was Chief-Instructor and Staff Officer at the School of Musketry and from 1905-9 he was a Professor at the Indian Staff College. A nice copy, and uncommon.

Octavo. Original red cloth, title in gilt to the spine and in black to the upper board, decorative panelling in black. 2 folding maps. Spine slightly sunned, cloth overall a little mottled, endpapers browning, but a very good copy.
