KAYE, John William, G.B. Malleson, & Frederic Pincott.
A History of the Sepoy War in India. 1857-1858.
[Together with;] History of the Indian Mutiny, 1857-1858. Commencing from the Close of the Second Volume of Sir John Kaye's History of the Sepoy War. [&] Analytical Index
Mixed editions as usual, Kaye first published 1864-76, Malleson 1878-80, and Pincott in 1880. The standard "empire" history. " massive, verbose, all-embracing histories: authoritative and dogmatic: entirely noble in sentiment, entirely British in attitude and viewpoint" (Taylor). Sorsky draws attention to Chauduri's comments on Malleson's scholarship noting that he does, however, "state that his work is the most exciting in Mutiny literature." Increasingly difficult to find complete and in sound condition, this set well-restored, highly presentable and highly usable both.
7 volumes octavo. Original red pebble-grained cloth, title gilt to spines, panels in blind to the boards, brown surface-paper endpapers. Maps and tables as called for. Ex-library, Holborn libraries with circular blind stamp to the upper boards, faint ink-stamps to the half-titles, armourial bookplates verso of the half-titles, a little rubbed, spines sunned as usual, neatly restored, spines relined, a very good set.
