Second edition, same year as the first. Stanley covered the Abyssinian expedition for the New York Herald and the sensational reception of his despatches from the fall of Magdala, which beat even the official reports back to London, was probably key in the decision to select him for the Livingstone mission. This copy with a calligraphic inscription; "Presented to Jessie Bandie by Her Majesty Queen Victoria, January 1st 1875."
Octavo. Original bottle green pictorial cloth, title gilt to the spine with a trophy of Ethiopian arms, gilt roundel portraits of Napier and Wolseley set in foliage blocked in black, brown surface-paper endpapers. Portrait frontispiece and 16 other plates, illustrations to the text, two folding maps. Slight rubbed, front hinge starting, consequently lightly shaken, short tear to the larger folding map, no loss, light toning, overall a very good copy.
