First edition. Nature referred to Shakespear's account as "an interesting account of a country of which, be it said to our shame, the average Englishman knows little" (vol. 94, 2357), commending in particular his account of the various tribes - "these troublesome neighbours" - based upon both official sources and his own personal experiences with the Assam Military Police Force; and the large collection of his own drawings and photographs. The reviewer considered the book "timely, because it impresses the need of a firm policy on this frontier, particularly as China is beginning to show her power." Shakespear had a distinguished career with the Sirmoor and the Assam Rifles, writing the regimental histories of both, his ethnographic collection was presented to the Pitt Rivers Museum.

Octavo. Original mid-blue cloth, title gilt to spine, gilt block of a Chindwin boat to the upper board, yellow top-stain. Frontispiece and 2 colour plates, numerous illustrations to the text, some full-page, 3 maps at the rear, all but one folding. A little rubbed, some dents to the lower board, light browning, but a very good copy.
