First edition. 3-page Preface by Churchill, who Spears had met whilst Sir John French's liaison with the French Fifth Army, and who describes the book as "a definite and new contribution to our knowledge of the opening phase," for Max Egremont writing in ODNB it is of "great descriptive power ." An important book, rarely encountered in such condition.
Octavo. Original plum cloth, title gilt to the spine. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 32 other plates, 14 folding maps, 2 sketches to the text. An exceptionally well-preserved copy in a slightly rubbed jacket, one or two small repairs, but complete and decidedly uncommon.
