Uncommon. Print run of just 1,500 copies, the 1881 edition of 2,000 is widely believed to have been suppressed. "Most military accounts of the campaign rest squarely on the official Narrative. A reasonably objective summary, it skirts controversial material but is neither complete nor free from error." (Morris The Washing of the Spears. p.619) The compiler was identified by Jay Luvaas in Higham's Official Histories.

Octavo. Original red embossed cloth, title gilt to spine. 7 folding maps in rear pocket, including the unlisted map of the Lines of Communication which was not issued with the first impression of 1881, 10 other maps and plans, 8 of them folding, one folding table Very slightly rubbed at the extremities, spine just a touch sunned, light browning particularly to the title page, but overall an unusually nice copy.
