First edition. An alternative title at the head of the first tale is "Captain Hodnett's Yarns of the Eastern Seas" which very much catches the flavour of this salty collection of apparently factual stories of piracy, smuggling, blockade-running and cannibals. Under Hodnett's name COPAC lists a single copy of something titled Tales of Adventure on Land and Sea in the Far East held at Oxford. OCLC has three copies of the same item, printed by R. Meiklejohn, also at Yokohama, in 1896. From the specific imprint of this item, compared with others on OCLC, we would guess at a date around 1892, predating the Meiklejohn publication. In his preface Hodnett says that he "has been asked by a few friends to put these stories in print, though he is perfectly aware that they will interest but a very few"; perhaps they exceeded his expectations and a further issue was called for. Of this putatively first issue we have been unable to trace another copy.

Octavo [iv], 36pp. Original blue cloth, title gilt to upper board. This copy inscribed "Mr. H. F. Nevile with the Author's Compliments." Endpapers browned, light toning else, front hinge cracking, externally slightly soiled, about very good.
