ABELL, Sir Westcott.
The Shipwright's Trade.
First edition. Excellent brief history of shipbuilding from the ancients to the mid-twentieth century. Abell was honorary vice-President of the Institute of Naval Architects, and a past Master of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, he contributed numerous technical innovations to the field, and published extensively. He was responsible for getting the Cutty Sark dry-docked at Greenwich, and his concerns about the state of Nelson's Victory led to the first campaign of restoration.
Octavo. Original green buckram with gilt lettering to spine and gilt block of Norman shipbuilders from the Bayeux tapestry on the upper board, in dust jacket. Frontispiece and 18 plates, numerous illustrations to the text, some full-page. Very good in price-clipped jacket, just one or two short splits.
