First edition. "Commencing with a short history of the Zulus from the time of Chaka, the volume gives a résumé of their quarrels with the Boers, down to the commencement of the war between Cetywayo and the English. A vivid picture is drawn of the battles, sieges, and more important incidents of the campaign, including the death of the Prince Imperial and the capture of Cetywayo." (Mendelssohn) Despite Major Ashe's self-effacing prefatory remarks - "this little work, although written con amore and from details furnished to me by my friend Captain the Hon. E. W. Wyatt Edgell, and others, lays no claim to historical value, but assumes to be merely the impressions de voyage of those who were actors in the scenes described" - this work is generally recognised as an invaluable source for the realities of the Zulu War. Wyatt Edgell was killed at the final Battle of Ulundi.

Octavo. Original mid-brown cloth, title gilt to spine, black rules and publisher's device to the boards. Folding map. Slightly rubbed, bookplate removed from the front pastedown, light browning and very light scattered foxing. A very good copy.
