First French edition. Account of the French and Indian War, and of Major Robert Rogers's attempt to find the northwest passage. When separated from the rest of the mission Carver had lived with the Dakota Sioux and "closely recorded their customs and culture in great detail" (ODNB). Despite doubts about its authenticity his account became "the most popular substantial account of any Amerindians originally written in English, and it enjoyed sixteen editions by the end of the century and translations into Dutch, German, and French." Notwithstanding the success of his account, Carver died in 1780 "absolutely and strictly starved".

Octavo (200 × 125 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, green silk page-marker, red edge-stain. Folding map, modern reproduction of the portrait from the third English edition bound in, no portrait called for in this edition. Somewhat browned, some occasional foxing, else a very good copy, rubbed at the extremities, upper joint cracking at the head, upper corners and spine repaired.
