LAMBERT, James Drummond
'Horse Sickness' in South Africa. It's [sic] Nature, Causes, Prevention, Symptoms, and Treatment.
Third edition, originally published by order of the Governor of Natal in 1881. No other copy traced. This copy with the author's presentation inscription to the upper wrap and several notes/corrections to the text. Lambert went to Natal as veterinary officer to the 17th Lancers during the Anglo-Zulu War - one of his notes reads "This article is the result of very practical experience when in the 17th Lancers in the Zulu Campaign of 1879" - was wounded at Ulundi, and served a second tour of duty with the army veterinary department, seeing service in the Transvaal campaign and becoming principal veterinary surgeon to the forces in Natal. He was later director general of the Army Veterinary Corps. Lambert misguidedly believed that horse sickness was the same as anthrax; however some of his practical observations are still quoted in the literature today.
Octavo. Original pale blue light card wraps. Loose in the wraps, ink stamp of the RUSI library to the upper wrap, but overall very good.
