Second edition. Inscribed by the author on the front blank, "Maurice Woods from the author Gen Lord Roberts. 19 Nov: 1905". This copy from the library of Frederick Sleigh, Lord Roberts of Kandahar, one of the most important British military figures of the nineteenth-century, described as "perhaps the ablest field commander since Wellington" (ODNB). A very handsomely bound copy with an apt association.

Octavo (185 × 120 mm). Early 20th-century red half morocco, spine gilt in compartments, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Spine and edges of boards a little darkened, endpapers tanned from turn-ins, contents toned. An excellent copy.
