First Edition. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper; "For Ruth Korn in gratitude and in memory of Howard Moss. Whitney Balliett, New York, 1987." Howard Moss was poetry editor of The New Yorker from 1948 until his death in the year of this inscription. Balliett has been described by Alistair Cooke as "without a rival in sight, the most literate and knowledgeable living writer on jazz."
