First publication of Barlow's translation, with additional material on navigation, of Enciso's Suma de Geographia, an English attempt to pre-empt the project for a new trade route "across the Pacific to the … new Spiceries, or East Indies" (Introduction). Described by Taylor as the "earliest account in English of the New World."
Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to the spine, both boards with gilt block of a galley within elaborate blind panels. Photogravure frontispiece and 2 similar plates, folding map at the rear. Ex-Manchester University Library, cloth a little rubbed and soiled, shelfmark removed from the tail of the spine, bookplate to front pastedown, light toning, but overall a very good copy.
