This magnificent illustration is probably a finished work for a book titled "The Building of a Fairy City" which was is in progress but never published before Timlin's death. His noted work The Ship that Sailed to Mars (1923) was in progress for two years and expanded until in its final form it had 48 pages of text and 48 colour plates, showing remarkable flights of fantasy, before being published by George Harrap, who decided not to typeset the text but run with the original calligraphy. Timlin moved to Kimberley, South Africa in 1912 and designed a number of important buildings in Kimberley while pursuing his interest in art, turning out a large number of watercolour fantasies in addition to oils, pastels, etchings and periodical illustrations. His work was regularly exhibited. He also wrote stories and composed music. He died in 1943.

Original artwork in pen, ink and watercolour on paper. Image approximately 900 × 740 mm. Signed and dated William M. Timlin 1939 to the lower right. Framed.
