First edition, first impression. Arthur Machen's copy, signed and dated by him on the front free endpaper, below which he has inscribed one of his own quotations referring to his birthplace in Wales, "Caerleon-on-Usk, the little silent, deserted village that was once the golden Isca of the Roman legions, that is golden for ever and immortal in the romances of King Arthur and the Graal and the Round Table". The anthology prints two pieces by Machen, one also referring to the Roman legions at Carleon. With the bookplate of T. Flytton Armstrong, i.e. John Gawsworth, the Bohemian poet and King of Redonda who considered Machen one of his literary idols. In addition, Edith Sitwell has signed her contribution to the book.
Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and upper board gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine and edges of boards darkened, lightly rubbed at extremities. An excellent copy in the rubbed and faded jacket with tanned spine panel with a few nicks, spots, and short closed tears.
