Superb series of images of Garner in the studio at some time in the early 'sixties; pensive, wistful even, in jacket and tie at the keyboard; amused, working on a score; and two fabulous shots of him recognising and greeting an arriving friend. Entirely characteristic, great studies. Chuck Stewart graduated from Ohio University with a major in photography, and subsequently served as a U.S. Army photographer in the Korean War. He then moved to New York and worked with noted jazz photographer Herman Leonard, taking over Leonard's business in 1953. Chuck Stewart has covered record sessions and shows, taken publicity shots in his studio, and contributed to magazines and books, also working in editorial, travel and fashion photography. In 2009 he won the Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography, which event was marked by an exhibition of his work - Looking at the Music: The Jazz Photography of Chuck Stewart - at the Lincoln Center. Accompanied by a copy of Chuck Stewart's Jazz Files (1985).

4 large (355 × 280 mm) original photographs, back-stamps of Charles H. Stewart Photography. Some creasing at the corners, one with a small piece torn away, but overall very good.
