ARGENTINE, Richard.
De praestigiis et incantationibus daemonum et necromanticorum
liber singularis nunqam [sic] antè hac aeditus. Auctore Ricardo Argentino Anglo, Medico.
First edition of this magical treatise, the last work of the disreputable Ipswich schoolmaster and clergyman Richard Argentine [formerly Sexton] (1510/111568), published in Basel but dated from Exeter in 1563. Though well-held institutionally, the book is rare in commerce, with no copy appearing in auction records.
Small octavo (159 × 94 mm). Contemporary limp vellum, edges stained red. With index leaves, but without the final blank. Provenance: Bibliothecae M. Hyacinthi Theodori Baron (engraved bookplate). Vellum soiled, front cover slightly warped, a few early underlines (now faded), still a very good copy.
