Being an Account of the Social Work of The Salvation Army in Great Britain.
First Edition First Impression, Presentation Copy, with the author's signed presentation inscription facing the title page, "To Ronald Ross, from H. Rider Haggard, Ditchingham, 12 January 1911". The recipient was Haggard's friend, the Nobel laureate Sir Ronald Ross (1857–1932). Awarded the Nobel for medicine (the first Briton to be awarded one) in recognition of his groundbreaking work abroad on the prevention and containment of malaria, the Indian-born Ross spent the latter part of his career in Britain. His concerns were not merely epidemiological and Ross saw clearly that social conditions, poor housing, poverty and disease were inextricably linked, a sentiment echoed in the pages of the present book, this copy of which was presented from Haggard's home at Ditchingham in Norfolk.
Octavo. Original maroon cloth, titles to upper board in blind and to spine gilt. Housed in a quarter black morocco slipcase, titles to spine gilt. Six photographic portraits including frontispiece. Small stain to title page offset to half title, later ink ownership inscription to front pastedown, brief annotation to rear free endpaper, nonetheless a bright and very fresh copy.
