First edition. After 2 years in the Met, Chadwick moved to Cheshire and was stationed at Duckinfield. "Shortly before the Consolidated Police Act came into force I was appointed Inspector in the Ashton-under-Lyne Borough Force, and on leaving, in 1862, to take up the position of Chief Constable of Stalybridge, I held the record for the number of convictions of thieves, etc." On the title page Chadwick is styled "Oldest Borough Chief Constable in England." He retired in 1899 aged 77. Jonathan Goodman was described by Julian Symons as "the premier English investigator of crimes past." On a Post-it note to the front pastedown he has recorded that the book was given to him on his 65th birthday by crime specialist booksellers Camille Wolff and Loretta Lay.

Octavo, (180 × 113 mm) recent quarter morocco on marbled boards. Portrait frontispiece, numerous illustrations to the text, some full-page. Embossed stamp of crime historian Jonathan Goodman to the front free endpaper. Some marginal browning and staining, frontispiece with a few minor chips and splits, but overall very good.
