A finely tooled and attractive example of mid-eighteenth century binding with the royal arms of the English king George II (16831760).
Large folio (412 × 254 mm). Contemporary green goatskin, spine divided in seven compartments by raised bands, compartments gilt with the arms of George II centrally and scroll cornerpieces, covers tooled in gilt with alternating fleurons and foliate tools, at the centre the gilt arms of George II, board-edges rolled in gilt, spot-marbled endpapers, gilt edges, lacks ties. Engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, ruled in red. With cancelled leaves substituted after the death of the Prince of Wales in March 1751: sigs A-C, D1 are cancels. Some skilful repair to joints and corners, covers unevenly faded.
