First edition of this Catholic catechism. Challoner (1691–1781) was eventually vicar apostolic to the London district; he published a wide variety of religious works; in Cardinal Wiseman's words, "supplied, in fact, almost the entire range of necessary or useful religious literature for his Catholic fellow-countrymen". His career spanned a period when Catholicism was mostly not persecuted in England, though he was to die of a stroke in the immediate aftermath of the Gordon riots. In the preface he attacks Conyers Middleton's argument in his Letter from Rome (1729) that popery was a revival of paganism.

Duodecimo (166 × 98 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, double gilt rules, unlettered. Extremities a little worn, front joint cracked at foot but held firm by cords, text clean, a very good copy.
