(CARTES DE VISITE.)
Album of 90 Victorian Celebrity Cartes de Visite.
Extensive mid-19th century carte de visite album containing cards of public figures, authors, and entertainers. Cartes de visite, small photos the size of visiting cards, were developed in Europe in the late 1850s and were popular throughout the 1860s. Collecting celebrity cards was very fashionable, and this album is an exceptional example, containing 90 cards including those of Robert Browning, Thomas Carlyle, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, William Galdstone, Gustave Dore, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Victor Hugo, Washington Irving, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Bulwer Lytton, John Stuart Mill, John Everett Millais, John Ruskin, Cardinal Newman, John Tenniel, Alfred Lord Tennyson, William Thackery, Algernon Charles Swinburne, and Hans Anderson.
Concertina album in brown morocco by Jenner & Knewstub, diced pattern stamped to boards and spine in black, metal clasps and monogram, blue silk doublure. 90 cartes de visite inserted into individual oval-frame paper slots mounted into the album. Each hand-labelled in pencil. Binding rubbed and worn at the corners and ends of spine, small spots of wear to silk doublure, light spotting and toning to album contents, pale mottling to some cards. Very good condition.
