First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front blank to Don Preome of the Oka-La Trappe monastery in Quebec, "mon cher rev. Pere Dom Preome, hommage religieux et filial en N.S./Fr. Louis OSCO". Further inscribed by Father James Fox, then serving as Merton's abbot at Gethsemani, "to dear Dom Preome, with gratitude, affection, and an assurance of our continued prayers", then an ink stamp reading "All for Jesus Thru Mary With a Smile", followed by his signature. Both Merton and Fox use the traditional tau cross of the Cistercian brotherhood in addition to their inscriptions. With the ink stamp of the monastery Oka-La Trappe on the title page.

Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine and design to upper board gilt, pictorial endpapers, yellow top-stain. With the dust jacket. Housed in a brown cloth slipcase. Lightly rubbed at extremities. An excellent copy in the jacket with a tape repair to each end of the spine on the verso.
