First edition of Freud's first published paper. "Freud's second piece of student research, on the function of the large Reissner cells in the spinal cord of the primitive fish Petromyzon, was assigned to him by Professor Ernst Brücke, head of the Institute of Physiology in Vienna, where Freud had been admitted in the fall of 1876. Freud showed that the Reissner cells 'gave rise to the root-fibres of the posterior roots' (Standard edition III, p. 228). Freud's investigation of the Reissner cells appeared in print three months before the publication of his first original piece of student research, on the gonadic structure of the male eel" (Norman).
