First edition in French, originally published in Berlin the previous year. Stumm, a lieutenant in the Westphalian Hussars, was attached to the Headquarters of Kaufman's Russian expedition to Khiva in 1873, notionally sent to bring an end to the brigandage and slaving that interfered the peaceful pursuit of trade in the region, but in truth part of Russia's campaign to take control of the Central Asian khanates.

Octavo (241 × 152 mm) contemporary black cloth with black leather label. 2 folding coloured maps, 3 coloured plans. Slightly rubbed and soiled, foxing and browning, small ink stamps of the officer library of the 24ieme Regiment d'Artillerie to title page and last map, but overall very good.
