First edition. Major-General Burne joined the 20th Regiment in 1855 and served in the Crimea and in fifteen actions of the Indian Mutiny, including the siege and capture of Lucknow. He was Military Secretary to Sir Hugh Rose (Lord Strathnairn) when Commander-in-Chief in India in 1861; Private Secretary to the Earl of Mayo, Viceroy of India, 1876-1878 and Secretary of the Political and Secret Department, India Office, 1874. He was a member of the Council of India, 1887-1897. Burne "held an uncanny ability to attach himself to powerful figures in India and subsequently gained important positions His memoirs reflect a well-mannered, brightly polished young man accustomed to working in the corridors of power Professionally his knowledge of Afghan matters earned Burne much kudos in the course of his forty years of service " (Riddick).
Original blue combed cloth, title gilt to the spine and upper board. Photogravure portrait frontispiece and sixteen other plates. A little rubbed, spine relined, some light browning to the endpapers, text a touch toned, else a very good copy.
