First English edition. Gerard was US ambassador to Germany from 1913 until 1917 when the German government asked for him to be withdrawn. "He served his own country well, and really served Germany well too, if she had but realised the fact; for his warnings and prophecies came true in every particular" (Falls). The George H. Doran Company of New York City published Gerard's My Four Years in Germany in 1917, in the following year it was filmed. Ambassador Gerard was of major incidental importance in the rise of Warner Brothers My Four Years in Germany becoming their first nationally syndicated film.

Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to spine. With dust jacket. Folding facsimile of the Kaiser's telegram, 16 plates, and facsimile documents to the endpapers. Cloth a little rubbed, half-title with tear along the fore-edge, no loss, jacket largely defective, overall a very good copy.
