The United States and Canada, in 1832, 1833, and 1834.
First edition. Arfwedson was the son of a Swedish merchant who travelled Europe and America in the 1830s to study commerce. He published an account of his tour through Britain, Switzerland and Belgium in Swedish in 1831, his North American travels being first published in English, the Swedish edition issued in the following year. Arfwedson took considerable interest in characteristic American social and political institutions, travelling in company with the English prison reformer William Crawford his comments on the American penal system are of particular interest, as are his views on slavery.
2 volumes octavo (205 × 113 mm). Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, black morocco labels, gilt rules to the spine, blind foliate roll at edges of the corners and spines, edges sprinkled red. Lithographic frontispiece to each volume. A little rubbed, slightly open after the frontispiece in volume I, both frontispieces browning, light toning else, but a very good set.
