First edition in English, originally published in French the previous year. "The author's second journey with A. Pépin and G. Capus in Central Asia in the years 1886-87. From Samarkand he explored the head of the Oxus in the Pamirs and descended to the Indus from the Wakhan valley through Masutj in Chitral." (Yakushi) Brushfield was an antiquary and lunacy expert, "appointed medical superintendent at Brookwood; he assisted in planning the buildings there, and also subsequently helped to design the cottage hospital. He pioneered the non-restraint treatment of lunatics and attempted to brighten the life of asylum patients by making the wards cheerful and by organizing entertainments."
2 volumes, octavo, original blue/green cloth, title gilt to spines, onlaid illustration on cloth to upper boards within a wide gilt panel. Numerous illustrations, some full-page. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Brushfield to the front pastedowns. A little rubbed, head and tail of spines crumpled, corners slightly bumped, light marginal browning, but overall a very good set.
