Travels and Adventures in the Province of Assam, during a Residence of Fourteen Years.
First edition. Butler was a major in the Company's 55th Bengal Native Infantry and served as the Principal Assistant to the Governor General on the North East Frontier of Assam. His purpose here is to describe "the habits, customs, and manners of the remaining wild tribes of the hills, viz., Anghamee Nagahs, Kookies, Meekirs, and Rengma Nagahs, with whom a lengthened residence rendered him intimately acquainted." (Preface) Riddick remarks that "His travel adventures are marked by the generic characteristics of an Indian tour: heat, thirst, hunger, wet, cold, illness and mosquito," whilst Czech indicates "a chapter noting the capturing of elephants, with an additional chapter detailing his hunts for buffalo, tiger, and rhinoceros from elephant back."
Octavo, original green slub-grained embossed cloth, title gilt to spine. Tinted lithographic frontispiece and 7 other similar plates, large folding route map with route marked in red, folding lithographed plan of the Hill Fort Konomah in the Naga Hills. Spine sunned, light damp-mottling to the lower board, a little rubbed, tissue-guards browned, light browning else, a very good copy.
