[CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de.]
Don Quixote de La Mancha.
Translated from the Spanish by P. A. Motteux.
A very handsomely bound and illustrated set of Don Quixote. P. A. Motteux (16631718) was a translator, dramatist, and editor of The Gentleman's Journal. His greatest successes were his translation of Rabelais and this edition of Don Quixote, which was "widely admired throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for its descriptive lucidity and playful wit" (ODNB).
4 volumes, large octavo (227 × 145 mm). Contemporary tan half calf by Bayntun, spines gilt in compartments, tan morocco labels and cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Frontispiece in each volume and 33 plates by Adolphe Laluze. An excellent set.
