Details

First edition. Richardson was best-known for his research into anaesthetics and for his involvement in public health and the sanitary movement. He founded and edited the first journal dedicated to public health, the Journal of Public Health and Sanitary Review, in 1855, and wrote prolifically on health, but also plays, biographies, poems, songs, and "even a romantic novel, The Son of a Star (3 vols., 1888)" (ODNB). He was knighted in June 1893. Of this book he wrote "I have written this work for those members of the intelligent reading public who... wish to know the leading facts about the diseases of the human family, their causes and prevention". It is written in the form of a reference book.
