First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to head of half-title, “To Franklin and Penelope, Paul Oliver”. Franklin and Penelope Rosemont were the directors of Charles H. Kerr & Company, a publisher of books on history and radical history in Chicago. A biography of Franklin was co-authored by Paul Garon, noted Blues scholar and friend of Paul Oliver. Paul Oliver “writes with authority and affection of a folk art that has profound significance for all Americans” (The New York Times).
