The Gunns are Jean Gunn, a good friend of Freya Stark's in her later years and her husband Dr William Gunn, founder of the European Centre for Disaster Medicine, former Director of Emergency Humanitarian Operations for the WHO and author of 20 monographs, largely on humanitarian relief. Pamela Cooper was friend and wartime secretary of Freya Stark, who became godmother to her son, Malise Ruthven. Pamela and her husband Derek cooper founded the organisation Medical Aid for Palestine. This authobiography "begins in a privileged rectory nursery in 1910 and ends in war-ravaged Lebanon during the 1982 Israeli invasion" (front flap).
