Gardner succeeded Kingsley Amis as the author of the James Bond continuation novels and went on to write 14 original Bond novels and novelisations of the films Licence to Kill (1989) and GoldenEye (1995). Scorpius (1988) was the first Bond book to not be published in the UK by Jonathan Cape - all subsequent book books by Gardner were published solely by Hodder & Stoughton.
