The first attempt at a systematic topographical description of GreeceFirst edition of Wheler's account of his travels through Greece and Constantinople in 1675-76.
Wheler was particularly interested in botany and topography, and this was the first work to attempt a systematic topographical description of Greece. The book is extensively illustrated with engravings of inscriptions, coins, plants, and buildings, including an illustration of the Parthenon before the fateful explosion of 1687. It remained the standard English book on Greece for many years, despite never being reprinted.
Folio (299 x 184 mm). Contemporary calf, covers ruled in blind with blind floral cornerpieces, red edges.
Folding map, 4 engraved full-page plates of coins, 3 small plates; engraved illustrations in text throughout.
Very light residue of old label to spine, calf with slight craquelure, hinges a little tender without split to calf, small wormhole and creasing to front endpapers, short closed tear at foot of third plate of coins, contents clean and crisp, minor peripheral paper faults, folding map and one small plate expertly re-inserted. An excellent copy.
