British merchants in Russia
First edition. James Spilman (1680-1753) started trading in Russia in 1701, rising to the position of one of the leading British merchants to the country and making a major contribution to the Anglo-Russian treaty of commerce in 1734. In 1742 he published this work, containing an account by John Elton and Mungo Graeme of their explorations in 1739, where they attempted to find a trans-Caspian trade route from Astrakan to Persia which the British could exploit. The work contains numerous observations on Russian and central Asian history, customs and commerce, at a time when British trade with Russia and knowledge of its interior was rapidly increasing.Description
Octavo (190 x 123 mm). Rebound in modern boards, printed paper label to front board, edges sprinkled red.
Condition
Compplete, in spite of erratic pagination. Small ink notation on verso of title page. A few blemishes to contents, stab-holes in gutter from prior binding, p. 7 with 2 small chips, p.29 with chip at foot, final advertisement leaf discreetly laid down. A very good copy.
