Notes

First edition. A Laodicean initially appeared as a serial in the European edition of Harper's New Monthly Magazine from December 1880 to December 1881, and in Harper's in America between January 1881 and January 1882. Each instalment featured an illustration by George du Maurier, who had already illustrated another of Hardy's serials, The Hand of Ethelberta. However, with A Laodicean, Hardy and Du Maurier worked closer together, regularly exchanging letters discussing the subject matter and composition of Du Maurier's work.
