A Little Fishing Book.Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1930 Stock Code: 146003
First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the first blank to a fellow Liberal politician: "Hubert Carr-Gomm, with kindest regards, from Cecil Harmsworth July 1931", accompanied by an autograph letter signed from the author to Carr-Gomm, dated 10 July 1931. He writes, "My dear Hubert, While I think of it, here is my little fishing book... I still hope to expand it and publish it in the ordinary way". This is one of 80 copies privately printed at the Cuala Press; the trade edition followed in 1942.
Harmsworth (18691948), a Liberal politician and diarist, was a great enthusiast of fishing: "it was a point of comment for him that in 1915 he did not manage day's fishing until May, and then could not enjoy it because he could not get the Flanders battlefield off his mind" (Thorpe & Toye, p. 23). "Through his purchase and restoration of Samuel Johnson's house in London's Gough Square, which has thereby been preserved for posterity, he left a lasting gift to the nation" (ODNB).
