Rare first edition of this military dictionary, a technical dictionary explaining military terminology for the edification of the interested civilian and neophyte soldiers alike, which was later expanded and went through several editions in the 18th century. ESTC records editions from c.1730 onwards to be by "J. W., Esq."
"Blunderbuss. A short fire-arm, with a very large bore to carry a number of musket or pistol bullets, proper to do execution in a crowd, or to make good a narrow passage, as the door of a house, a stair-case, or the like."
Duodecimo (131 x 74 mm). Later sheep, sides with double blind-rule border, spine lettered gilt.
Contemporary ownership inscriptions "J. Wood" and Wm. Stone to the title. Joints and extremities rubbed, a good copy.
ESTC locates five UK institutional copies; at the BL, Cambridge, Durham, the Honourable Artillery Company, and Oxford; and five US institutional copies; at Rice, the Society of the Cincinnati, UCLA, Texas, and Vassar. WorldCat and Library Hub add one copy
