First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "A. M. Carr-Saunders, with compliments from W. O. S. 3rd February 1929". A Modern Theory of Ethics was Stapledon's first published work of prose, based on the thesis for his PhD in philosophy awarded at the University of Liverpool in 1925. The recipient, A. M. Carr-Saunders (1886-1966), was a biologist and eugenicist and the author of The Population Problem. He is credited by Stapledon on page vi of the introduction to this volume for "advice on those chapters which refer to biological principles".

Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt and to front board in blind.
Condition
Cloth a little rubbed, corners bumped, very faint toning to endpapers. An excellent copy.
